Categories of membership and affiliation

Within each member type – associations, institutions, and individuals – we currently offer a variety of membership categories.

Associations Institutions Individuals
National Associations Institutions Personal Affiliates
International Associations Institutional Sub-units Student Affiliates
Other Associations One-person Library Centres New Graduates
Association Affiliates School Libraries Non-salaried

Most of our membership categories for associations and institutions are subject to a system of differentiated fees based on bands related either to the development status of the country where they are based or the operating expenses of the Member.

In the former case, to divide Members into bands, we apply the UNESCO Scale of Assessment and the United Nations List of Least Developed Countries.

Many membership benefits apply in the same way to all IFLA Members and Affiliates, such as free registration to their relevant Regional Division, or discounts on IFLA Publications and for the IFLA World Library and Information Congress.

Some membership benefits vary by membership category, such as nomination and voting rights at IFLA’s elections and at the General Assembly; the number of votes and the number of free Sections to which you can register.
