IFLA and UNESCO Celebrate 30 Years of World Press Freedom Day with Documentary Heritage

    World Press Freedom Day (3 May) pays homage to freedom of the press as an essential part of democratic, informed, and participatory societies. It calls for a reflection on its history, evaluation of the current state of press freedom around the world, and for remembrance of those journalists who have lost their lives providing access to information.

    IFLA Art Libraries Section: Big Ideas, Challenging Questions satellite conference - Registration is now open

      The Rijksmuseum Research Library and the IFLA Art Libraries Section will organize a satellite conference from 17 - 19 August at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, The Netherlands around the theme Big Ideas, Challenging Questions. The goal is to discuss the future of art and visual information, and to talk about the challenges and opportunities of the art library in relation to digital scholarly and/or artistic practices.

      Libraries Stand Out in Special Rapporteur’s Report on Cultural Rights of Migrants

        Libraries not only depend on human rights to deliver their services – they actively contribute to their realisation. The values of libraries and many aspects of their missions are interlinked with ensuring access to information and freedom of expression. Both of these fundamental freedoms are also aspects of cultural rights. For their many actions to enable participation in cultural life, libraries can be considered cultural rights defenders.

        New member of the IFLA Governing Board

          As a result of the vacancy for the Chair of the Management of Library Associations Section (MLAS) who is also a member of the Governing Board, a call for nominations was conducted within the members of the MLAS Standing Committee. Only one nomination was received and therefore the nominated candidate, Loida Garcia-Febo (United States of America), is automatically elected.

          Actions of Serials & Other Continuing Resources Standing Committee (SCORE) to Collaborate on Open Access Call at IFLA

            At a global level, the Open Access (OA) movement is currently in state of transition as it seeks to maximize the openness of data, research outputs and information financed with public funds; for this, various actors are required to develop and implement collaborative strategies. IFLA's recently released "10 years of the IFLA open access statement: a call to action" identifies new essential areas for that action; one of them is to lead by example through collaboration with various actors in the world of Open Access.
