Preserving and celebrating culture can be key to efforts to promote cohesion and cooperation in diverse societies. This is no truer than in the case of indigenous communities, who have historically been isolated or persecuted, but now, rightfully, demand equality.
IFLA has today published an update to its Marrakesh Monitoring Report. This sets out which countries have ratified or acceded to the Treaty, and which have taken the necessary steps at the national level to make it a reality. It underlines the need for continued attention at the national level to make a reality of the promise of Marrakesh.

The concept of controlled digital lending is receiving growing attention. Originating in the United States, it is now a subject of discussion elsewhere in the world, raising both interest and concern. 2019 is the International Year of Indigenous Lanaguges. It provides a great opportunity to highlight the work that libraries are doing to support and promote languages, and the communities that speak them.
The IFLA PAC Centre at Qatar National Library invites all libraries, cultural institutions and museums in the region to nominate paper and book conservators to attend this three-day training course: Practical Methods for the Scientific Examination of Library Objects, held at the headquarters of the National Records and Archives Authority in the Sultanate of Oman 19-21 February 2019.
