26 November 2018On 29 November 2018 we will mark 24 years since the IFLA/UNESCO Public Library Manifesto was ratified in 1994. As we move towards celebrating the 25th anniversary in 2019, public libraries and public librarians everywhere are being asked to reflect on how the Manifesto relates to their library and to share this on social media. In particular we would like to have a concentrated social media campaign on Thursday 29 November 2018 which marks the beginning of the lead up to the 25th Anniversary.

20 November 2018Ahead of further debate around the South African Copyright Amendment Bill, IFLA would like to share views on a number of issues raised by some stakeholders around the proposed legislation. Although the Bill is well underway, and there is positive progress on several library-related topics, there is concern that issues raised by a few stakeholders might slow down or undermine progress.

Next Copyright meeting at the World Intellectual Property Organisation: get involved!
15 November 2018Copyright is a core element of libraries’ work, and this is why IFLA is an active advocate for better copyright laws. Our engagement at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) is a key part of this. WIPO’s copyright committee (SCCR) meets twice a year and has capacity to legislate on several matters. The topic of exceptions and limitations to copyright for libraries, archives and museums are on the table for discussion. The next meeting is getting closer: 26-30 November.

15 November 2018The need to preserve the benefits of an open internet while finding means to address concerns about the way it works was high on the agenda at the 13th Internet Governance Forum, held in Paris from 12-14 November. IFLA was active, underlining how libraries do not only bring connectivity and training, but also essential values and skills to the discussion.

Brief on the 2015 UNESCO Recommendation on Safeguarding Documentary Heritage
8 November 2018Around the world collections were suffering a variety of fates: illegal trading, destruction, natural disasters and loss of interest, leaving many at risk of being lost. In 2015 the Recommendation concerning the preservation of, and access to, documentary heritage including in digital form was adopted by UNESCO, giving new momentum to the Memory of the World Programme.
