IFLA Library Map of the World – more than 2 million libraries counted!

    Thanks to data contributors from around the world IFLA was able to count more than 2 million libraries in 99 countries. During this initial phase of the Library Map of the World project we have learned about the state of libraries in these countries and moved closer to our shared goal of having reliable global library statistics.

    Placing Libraries at the Heart of Development: IFLA Speaks at World Bank

      Libraries are unique partners for development. By providing access to information, in a safe and welcoming environment with tailored support, they empower individuals and communities to create, innovate and take better decisions. IFLA President Glòria Pérez-Salmerón and Secretary-General Gerald Leitner took this message to the World Bank last week, making the case for access to information as a key element of broader development policies, and for libraries as essential actors in achieving this.

      Libraries Essential to Creating Informed, Independent, Information Literate Citizens

        Media and information literacy (MIL) plays a key role in giving people the ability to find, understand, evaluate and create information. Libraries have a long expertise in helping users of all ages, in all situations do this, in order to create, innovate, and improve their lives. IFLA attended this year’s Global MIL Week feature conference in Jamaica in order to underline this point in front of an international audience.

        Open in order to... ensure universal and equitable access to information

          Once again, IFLA wishes to join the celebration for open access week. This year, we have gathered materials of some of the presentations about open access that took place during the World Library and Information Congress in August 2017 in Wroclaw, Poland. By approaching the topic from many different angles, they are an example of how libraries support open access and provide input on how to continue doing so.
